Digital Tranformation for UNICEF

Leading the creative team to reimagine UNICEF’s global digital footprint.

Facing digital obsolescence, UNICEF embarked on a multi-year Digital Transformation Project to completely reinvent what a website was across UNICEF offices and initiatives.

UNICEF assembled an internal team to see through the project. Alongside a Project Lead, Content Strategist, and a Tech Lead, I acted as the project’s Creative Lead.

My Role as Create Lead

As Creative Lead, it was my responsibility to oversee the user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) designs of the rebuilt products. This included the use and representation of UNICEF’s globally recognized brand and photography.

Brand

Direct the best use of UNICEF’s global brand equity, including its logo, highly recognizable colors, and the proper usage of its signature photography and video.

Editorial

Assure the design enables editors from around the world to easily create, publish, and promote UNICEF’s compelling and urgent messages.

User Experience

Direct the global user journeys and site structures to make sure broad audiences are able to navigate and find what they are looking for.

User Interface

Direct the look, feel, and organization of page templates and elements to assure clarity, usability, and to meet UNICEF’s accessibility standards.

Over the course of several years, our internal team worked with stakeholders across UNICEF’s global offices, external agencies, and our internal implementation team to create new foundation for UNICEF.org.

Project Timeline

2012

A Dated Platform

Once a state-of-the-art site, the UNICEF.org platform was left static and was no longer capable of keeping up with the digital expectations of a global organization.

2013

Building the Team

I started working as a Senior Designer to tackle some short-term design updates to the UNICEF.org platform.

2014

An Interim Refresh

While the work for a full infrastructure overhaul was underway, I designed new templates using the existing system.

2018

Training the Team

I traveled with our team to regions across the world to train our colleagues in the new system.

2019

A Platform For Every Child

By 2019, with the basic back-end built out, the site was rolled out on global and local levels.

2021

Fine Tuning

With many features still pending at launch, we continuously pushed iterations to the design and functionality.

2023

Improved Navigation

After user research and extensive UX practices, we launched a major upgrade to the site navigation.

2025

Constant Improvement

Although I am no longer working with UNICEF, the iterative structure of the design team continues to evolve.

Behind the Design, A System of Components

Using the Atomic Design approach, the design system was built with reusable and adaptable components. I acted as the Creative Director, working with talented designers both in-house and in external agencies, to craft a library of components that would build up seamlessly into templates and pages.
